FREE software to motivate more of your kids to get inspired by I.C.T. Taught by Bubble Dome’s top, expert tutors, we will spend 2 days introducing 3D Modelling and Animation, Computer Programming and Games Development with state of the art Open Source, FREE software that you install and distribute to students without any licensing or copyright issues.
Day One
Kodu from Microsoft’s Fuse Labs - This software allows pupils to learn real programming concepts in a purely visual environment. The whole package is designed to allow children of any age to program without typing a word; in fact, you can program a complete game using nothing but an Xbox controller! This is free on windows and pupils can download the Xbox 360 version for very little cost on their consoles at home.
SmallBasic – This is another Free Microsoft package designed for intermediate and older children. This software includes a complete integrated development environment to type in real code that really works. It’s Visual Basic for beginners and includes a limited set of commands with immediate help built in, a complete curriculum of lessons and the power to create everything from the classic “Logo Turtle” drawings to fully fledged, web page embedded games.
Construct - This is an Open Source Project designed to allow simple “Drag and Drop” game development. Draw sprites, make them move, give them behaviours, respond to events, test and refine. Fully free, highly powerful and taking advantage of the latest hardware, this package has the potential to inspire whole classes to collaborate and create with only their imagination to hold them back.
Day 2
Blender3D - This is simply THE BEST FREE 3D modelling, animation and rendering software in the world. The brand new interface gives Blender a much more user friendly look and feel. This course will teach you modelling and animation fundamentals in this hugely rewarding and highly professional package. Make 3D content for web pages, posters, presentations and games. With the skills you will start to learn then access one of the internet’s best supported help and tutorial forums.
Unity3D - The ultimate complete Game Development Environment.... for free! Use Blender to make 3D content, import sounds, materials and textures, position them and add behaviours through a fully integrated JavaScript and C# Editor. The final project can be built to PC, Mac or Webpage at the click of a button. All this plus integrated sound, physics and network capabilities. And on top of this, the same project (with the registered version costing $1500 to $1900) can be built for iPod Touch/iPad and Android with further licences available for Xbox, Wii and PS3!
C# - This language is a next generation High-level language set to replace the ageing C/C++. Based on the .NET framework it takes a lot of the hard work out of code creation. This segment will wrap up the course with a crash course in scripting. You will integrate all you have learned to give you a taste of what your kids might find possible. Take 3D Content created in Blender, import it into Unity then add some custom behaviours with a touch of C# programming. Build the finished project to PC, Mac or Web and take it back to show off your new skills!
TEACHERS' HIGH LEVEL THINKING WORKSHOPS
