School Holiday Courses for Children Aged 5 to 16 Years

Every school holiday break Bubble Dome runs school holiday workshops in Auckland, where 3D computer learning is combined with lateral thinking and problem solving activities. These three day courses attract children from all over the country and provide them with an amazing opportunity to explore a variety of 3D and 2D computer applications while being challenged by unique briefs featuring fantasy worlds and tools that act as catalysts for the imagination.

Our next school holiday Standard Computer Course will be running from Tuesday  September 30th to Thursday October2nd (North Shore venue) and from October 7th to 9th(Central venue) and will cater for children aged 5 to 16 years, grouped according to age and previous experience.   We will also be offering a four day Advanced Computer Course  for those who are aged 13 and over, or are aged 10 and over and have previously attended a Bubble Dome course. For those students who have already attended an advanced course, we will be offering for the first time an Experts Computer Course.

Following the success of the graphics and fashion design course that we offered for the first time in the last holidays, we will be offering this course at both venues these holidays - please refer to Graphics, Fashion Design and Wearable Arts.

Bubble Dome will also be introducing a  new course -  Movie-making

STANDARD COMPUTER COURSE
3 Days: 30th September to 2nd October (Carmel College, Shakespeare Road, Milford)
3 Days: October 7th to 10th (Onehunga High School)
AGES: 5-16 years (grouped by age and previous experience)
TIMES: 9.00am to 3.00pm or 5.00pm
This is a three day course that develops high-level thinking skills and computer skills at the same time. All students attend the first four workshops listed below over the course of three days. There is an optional extension lab at the end of each day which is highly recommended for young enthusiasts.

3D COMPUTER MODELLING AND ANIMATION
Learn firsthand how 3D models are made for movies and games by discovering how to model your own characters and scenes. Uncover a three dimensional world within your computer where you can look at your scene from many different perspectives. Take your imagination on a visual adventure as you create amazing 3D artworks while discovering what is possible with this amazing software. Let your expert tutors guide you in exciting new directions.

DESIGNING COMPUTER GAMES
If you have ever dreamed of designing your own computer games then you will love this class where you learn how to turn your ideas into reality! Invent games with unique rules and winning strategies. Take your games home to test out on your friends. The tutors, who are experienced games designers, will introduce you to the exciting world of game development.

DREAM HOUSES AND ARCHITECTURE
Imagine inventing your own futuristic dream house or ‘out-of-this world’ building using incredible 3D software! Suppose you could travel inside your building filling it with all sorts of unique furniture, appliances and futuristic objects. Your dreams can become a reality in this fun workshop which allows you to become an amazing architect.

MODELLING ZONE
Have fun inventing your own models using construction equipment in this exciting hands-on workshop. Rise to the challenge of many intriguing design briefs such as - ‘Invent furniture for an Octopus!’ This workshop will give you an insight into the processes used by movie makers, graphic designers and games developers in order to come up with unique ideas.

OPTIONAL 5.00PM FINISH - MINI LECTURE AND WORKSHOP
This is a not to be missed highlight of the day where people with industry experience will discuss how the 3D movies like Shrek and Madagascar are made. In this mini lecture series you will also discover how games are made behind the scenes. You will find out how to get started in a career in 3D, graphics or games development. This is followed by a chance to work on your own projects with the tutors providing advice in advanced techniques.

Cost: Standard 3 Day Course 9am-3pm Programme - $185 covers tuition and materials for 3 days OR Standard 3 Day Course 9am-5pm Programme - includes mini lectures and workshop - $235 covers tuition and materials for 3 days.

AGES: 10+ years and have attended a Bubble Dome Computer Course previously, or for those who are 13+ years
TIMES: 9.00am to 5.00pm
This is a four full-day advanced course and students attend all the workshops listed below.

3D COMPUTER MODELLING AND ANIMATION
In this advanced class you will learn how to make your own refined characters in Blender ready to use in your 3D games. Learn advanced techniques working with edge loops to develop more intricate details and expressions. Work at an advanced level with the sculpt tool to create models with a unique look and feel. There is so much to learn in this exciting class!


3D GAMES PROGRAMMING USING BLITZ 3D.
Enjoy discovering what Blitz 3D is capable of as you turn your dreams into reality. Your expert tutor will show you what is possible then help you in the process of developing your very 3D game. Learn to import models into your game from Blender and make them part of the action! Master a complete programming language capable of creating any 3D game you can imagine!


ADVANCED COMPUTER GAMES DESIGN
Take your games design to the next level with the expert games design tutor who has knowledge of all the techniques to achieve your own dream games. Learn how to create obstacle paths, and advanced looping and movement actions. Test your games out on your friends and discover if this is a career for you!

INTRODUCTION TO ALICE AND GIMP
Explore two new programmes in this workshop. Alice is a fun way to learn the fundamentals of computer programming. Understand what it takes to become a computer programmer. Also discover the powers of open source GIMP. This photographic imaging software is so much fun to use. After the course use it at home for your own school and personal projects!

OPTIONAL 5.00PM FINISH - MINI LECTURE AND WORKSHOP

EXPERTS COMPUTER COURSE
4 Days: October 7th to 10th
VENUE: 602 Great South Road, Greenlane
ENTRY CRITERIA: 10+ years and have attended a Bubble Dome Advanced Computer Course previously
TIMES: 9.00am to 5.00pm
This is a four full-day experts' course and students attend all the workshops listed below. This course is run from the 'state-of-the-art' Nextspace venue in Greenlane. Places are strictly limited and are reserved for those who have previously attended a Bubble Dome Advanced course.

3D COMPUTER MODELLING AND ANIMATION

Learn how to model from real life using blueprints in this exciting workshop which will show you how to refine your modelling skills. Find out how to model accurately like the professionals by applying correct edge loops to your topology. Move to the next level of complexity and refinement and learn what it takes to become a modelling pro!

3D GAMES PROGRAMMING USING BLITZ 3D
Make your own character in blender then import it into Blitz 3D so you have a truly customised game of your own. Learn advanced techniques when using Blitz 3D software as your work moves to the next level. Watch your techniques develop beyond your expectations and be prepared to amaze your friends.

 


ADVANCED COMPUTER GAMES DESIGN
Learn how to make an obstacle evasion game where playersmust navigate through an obstacle path while their character is in constant motion. Students will learn the fundamentals of setting up collision based commands as well as looping and movement actions which are essential when creating and programming their own games.

COMPUTER PROGRAMMING AND 3D TELEVISION

This exciting workshop introduces students to design for 3D television using software Deep Exploration. Also experience an introduction to computer programming using a variety of applications.


PERSONAL PROJECT TIME
This workshop will allow you to develop your own personal projects using the software taught during the day. You will have the experience and knowledge of our expert tutors available. Bring your ideas to this class and watch them come to life!

GRAPHICS, FASHION DESIGN & WEARABLE ARTS COURSE
3 Days: September 30th to October 2nd (Carmel College, Shakespeare Road, Milford)

This is a three day, interactive course. All students attend the first three workshops listed below over the course of three days. There is an optional additional workshop at the end of the first two days which is a highly recommended part of the course.

DESIGNING INCREDIBLE PHOTO SHOOTS
Have awesome fun in this workshop where you will learn how to create a variety of looks and styles for a magazine spread. Experiment with different hairstyles in combination with decorative accessories and a unique theme that will challenge you to think outside the square. Learn all sorts of digital imaging tricks as you transform a real photograph into a surreal image.

BECOME A FASHION DESIGNER
Learn how to become a fashion designer in this exciting workshop where you will begin by practising fashion drawing with the help of your experienced tutors. Learn how to create your own original label with exclusive clothing that will stand out from the crowd. Discuss issues that fashion designers face each day then create your own new fashion trend with the help of Bubble Dome’s unique thinking tools that will ensure your ideas are far from normal!

WEARABLE ARTS AND CATWALK SHOW!
Experience the challenge and thrill of designing an original wearable arts costume for your own class show which parents are invited to! You will be presented with an array of unusual materials and objects then told to create a whole new fashion statement for yourself or a friend. Learn everything from construction techniques through to how to present in a catwalk. This is an experience to be treasured!

OPTIONAL 5.00PM FINISH – CONSTRUCTION LAB
Make the most of this end of day workshop where you will develop accessories for the end of course fashion show. Think about how you can make your appearance stand out from the crowd by designing unique props using a variety of different construction materials. Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your performance!

MOVIE MAKING COURSE

PRE-PRODUCTION WORKSHOP
Discover the movie making process in this exciting workshop where you will plan your movie action and learn how professional storyboards and scripts are designed. Take your imagination on an adventure while you generate endless scenarios for filming. Allow yourself to have incredible fun and be inspired by your tutors who are professional movie makers!

FILMING AND GREEN SCREENING
In this workshop everyone will experience the thrill of learning how to use a professional movie camera. You will be taught how to capture interesting angles, understand the language of movie makers and experience the art of ‘green screening’. After this workshop you will understand the process behind the shooting of the news reports on television!

ACTING AND FILM DIRECTORS LAB
Have fun learning how to act for the screen in this exciting workshop.  Practice your facial expressions, actions, and don’t forget your lines! Discover the real challenges of being a film director as you work with a team of people in the process of making your movie. Learn how to develop a critical eye as you analyse the quality of your shots and decide when it is necessary to reshoot a scene.

POST- PRODUCTION WORKSHOP
This is your opportunity to have lots of fun editing your show reels using computer software. Learn the process involved in post-production and the scrutiny involved in deciding on the best shots. Have fun discussing the footage you will keep as opposed to that you will discard in your own director’s meetings! Learn how to make crucial decisions from your professional tutors.

OPTIONAL 5.00PM FINISH - MAKING PROPS WORKSHOP
Don’t miss the opportunity to stay on for this end-of-day props workshop where you will have a great time making things for your movies. Enjoy hands-on activities where you make accessories and other special items that you design. Lots of fun with construction challenges!
